WICSCBS: A Legacy of Innovation
The West Indies Central Sugar Cane Breeding Station is one of the oldest and most respected breeding stations in the world. Since 1888, following the rediscovery of cane seedlings in Barbados, the station has provided genetic material ("fuzz") to industries globally.
1888
Seedling fertility rediscovered by Bovell & Harrison.
1900
Breeding led to the development of improved noble cane varieties BH10(12) and BA11569, revolutionising sugar industries across the Caribbean.
1932
The British West Indies Central Sugar Cane Breeding Station was established under the direction of the Barbados Department of Agriculture.
1962
The West Indies Sugar Association (later renamed the Sugar Association of the Caribbean Inc.) took over the Station, which became known as the West Indies Central Sugar Cane Breeding Station.
2026
Hosting the ISSCT Workshop to define the future of climate-resilient breeding.
